The Man and the Birds

One of my favorite Christmas traditions each year was listening to the late Chicago based radio broadcaster Paul Harvey tell this story.  I decided a few years back to continue this tradition each Christmas season through my Dispatch. Enjoy!

The Man and the Birds

Author Unknown

As told by Paul Harvey

The man I’m going to tell you about was not a scrooge, he was a kind decent, mostly good man. Generous to his family and upright in his dealings with other men. But he just didn’t believe in all of that incarnation stuff that the churches proclaim at Christmas time. It just didn’t make sense and he was too honest to pretend otherwise. He just couldn’t swallow the Jesus story, about God coming to Earth as a man.

He told his wife I’m truly sorry to distress you, but I’m not going with you to church this Christmas Eve. He said he would feel like a hypocrite and that he would much rather just stay at home, but that he would wait up for them. So he stayed and they went to the midnight service.

Shortly after the family drove away in the car, snow began to fall. He went to the window to watch the flurries getting heavier and heavier and then he went back to his fireside chair and began to read his newspaper.

Minutes later he was startled by a thudding sound. Then another ... and then another. At first he thought someone must be throwing snowballs against the living room window. But when he went to the front door to investigate he found a flock of birds huddled outside miserably in the snow. They’d been caught in the storm and in a desperate search for shelter they had tried to fly through his large landscape window. That is what had been making the sound.

Well, he couldn’t let the poor creatures just lie there and freeze, so he remembered the barn where his children stabled their pony. That would provide a warm shelter. All he would have to do is to direct the birds into the shelter.

Quickly, he put on a coat and galoshes and he tramped through the deepening snow to the barn. He opened the doors wide and turned on a light so the birds would know the way in. But the birds did not come in.

So, he figured that food would entice them. He hurried back to the house and fetched some bread crumbs. He sprinkled them on the snow, making a trail of breadcrumbs to the yellow-lighted wide open doorway of the stable. But to his dismay, the birds ignored the bread crumbs.

The birds continued to flap around helplessly in the snow. He tried catching them but could not. He tried shooing them into the barn by walking around and waving his arms. Instead, they scattered in every direction ... every direction except into the warm lighted barn.

And that’s when he realized they were afraid of him. To them, he reasoned, I am a strange and terrifying creature. If only I could think of some way to let them know that they can trust me. That I am not trying to hurt them, but to help them. But how? Any move he made tended to frighten them and confuse them. They just would not follow. They would not be led or shooed because they feared him.

He thought to himself, if only I could be a bird and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to the safe warm ... to the safe warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see ... and hear ... and understand.

At that moment the church bells began to ring. The sound reached his ears above the sounds of the wind.

He stood there listening to the bells, Adeste Fidelis, listening to the bells pealing the glad tidings of Christmas.

And he sank to his knees in the snow ….

Merry Christmas!

There Are Over 25,000 of Us. What If We Each Did One Thing?

Insights:

Do you think our nation has lost its moral compass? What does that word even mean when applied to the United States?

Recently, I was talking with a good friend about Abraham Lincoln. We had both read the book Leadership in Turbulent Times by Doris Kearns Goodwin, which looks at the leadership of Lincoln, both Roosevelts, and Lyndon Johnson.

One of the things that stood out about Lincoln was the fact that after he was elected president, he filled his cabinet with his “enemies” - people who had campaigned against him. Why? He wanted to listen to them and understand where they were coming from as he led the country.  This nation was founded on Christian principles, which shaped the nation’s moral compass. Loving our neighbor and our enemies was just something that Lincoln did.

Today we seem very far from being considered a Christian nation. Are we better off now? I wonder what Lincoln would say if he could see our culture for a day or two. He certainly understood division. The Civil War split our country. There were many other problems that he had to deal with. Yet, Lincoln's goal was to unite instead of causing further division.

In the bigger picture, I wonder what God thinks about us today. I know that He is not surprised because He is all knowing. Is He sad? Is He angry? Does He regret saying that He would never flood the world again? With all the anger, hatred, division, and confusion, are we too far gone? I firmly believe that God can bring us back. The question is first do we want Him to, and second, will we trust that His plan is better than ours? I think our steps away from God were slow at first but the past few years it seems like we have been sprinting.

We each have a choice every day. Do we live so people can see Jesus in us or do we adopt the direction that culture is going? Think about this. What if every one of us reading this did one thing every day to show God’s love to those we encounter? What then if everyone we encounter liked what they saw in us and decided to join us? More than 25,000 people read this blog! It would take just five days for over 1,000,000 people to be affected. Will that happen? I do not know. But if God is on our side, why not give it a try? Remember Jesus started with twelve men and look what God has done with that!

Questions For You To Think About:

  • What would be your definition of a Christian nation?

  • What do you see as the core problem in America?

  • How can you begin to show Jesus to those around you?

This Week’s Quote: Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao was born in December 1978 in the Philippines. He is regarded by boxing historians as one of the greatest professional boxers of all time. He is the only boxer in history to win twelve major world titles in eight different weight divisions. He also holds the record of being the only boxer to hold world titles in four different decades: the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and 2020s. He is a Christian and speaks boldly about his faith.

  • Being a Christian means accepting Christ as your savior, your God. That's why you are called a 'Christian.' If you remove Christ, there's only 'ian' and that means 'I am nothing.'

  • The most important thing as a leader is your relationship with God.

Do You Believe God Uses Each Of Us to Help Others?

Morning Pages Week twelve

This completes my 12 weeks in “The Artist's Way”  workbook. It has been a great journey for me - thank you for coming along!

The online dictionary defines ethics as “moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity.” I was listening to a podcast recently about the ethics of experiments that exposed people to Covid early in the Pandemic in order to test the experimental new vaccines. They had to know if the vaccines would work or not. They needed to know if there were side effects. They needed answers and they needed them ASAP.

It seems the only way to get the answers was to use volunteers who were willing to risk both taking the vaccine and being exposed to the virus in hopes of helping and/or saving others. As I listened, I wondered, was this really the only way? There seemed to be so many unknowns.  If the first people who took the vaccine knew all the risks involved and volunteered, was that okay? Is it okay to possibly sacrifice one (or more) in the hopes of saving many?

I believe that there are some people who saw this as a way to serve and help others. They were able to step away from themselves and focus on the greater good. They were willing to serve or sacrifice for others. The more I thought about it, I realized that things like that happen all around us every day. The men and women in the armed forces are a great example. So are our policemen, firemen and other emergency workers. The greatest example of sacrifice for others is Jesus, who gave His life so we could be saved.

So, all of that brings us back to ethics. If the moral principles that govern our behavior are consistent with God’s plan for our lives, how does that affect the choices we make? What would you do? If you had the opportunity to do something that would help someone else or many “someones” would you take it? What would God want you to do?

I see opportunities to be unselfish and help someone else almost every day. Are they big things like exposing myself to Covid? No, but they are things that can make a difference at some level in another’s life. If I really believe that God uses each of us to help others, why would I not consider those opportunities as they come along?

What do you think? How far do we take this role of sacrificing self for the good of others? What opportunities are there for us today?

Questions For You To Think About:

  • Are the ethics that you live by consistent with the teachings of Jesus?

  • What opportunities do you have to sacrifice for others today?

  • What motivates you to serve in this way?

This Week’s Quote: Denzel Washington

Denzel was born on December 28, 1954. He began his career in theater. He won a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role in the Broadway revival of Fences, by August Wilson, in 2010. He won 2 Academy Awards, and three Golden Globe Awards. My favorite Denzel Washington movie has to be Remember the Titans.

  • Man gives you the award but God gives you the reward.

  • I made a commitment to completely cut out drinking and anything that might hamper me from getting my mind and body together. And the floodgates of goodness have opened upon me - spiritually and financially.

This Week’s Trivia Question

The 12 Days of Christmas may be my least favorite Christmas song  but I love this trivia question! In total, how many gifts were given in “The Twelve Days of Christmas”?

This Week’s Did You Know

Water makes different sounds depending on its temperature! If you've listened to boiled water being poured, you'll discover it makes a different sound to cold water as its energy molecules are moving around at a much faster rate. Cold water has a lower pitched tone and sounds heavier for some reason.
